Birthstone Gemstones

Birthstone Gemstones

We constantly have people ask us for which gem is for which month so we decided to make the information available to you on our website.

There are 4 basic kinds of birthstones:

Modern Birthstones

Modern Birthstones which represent the present calendar month system was not known at the time of exodus and today birthstones have come to be more commonly associated with the calendar month of birth although many people prefer using stones from astrological charts to represent their birth or natal stone.

It is believed that the Breastplate of Aaron is the basis for the origin of birthstones (also known as natal stones). The instructions for fabricating the Breastplate are in Exodus 28, 15-30: calledl for the twelve stones of the Twelve Tribes of Israel to be set in four rows.

These gemstones corresponded to the zodiac signs of the time.

The Modern Birthstone list is the official birthstone list from the American National Association of Jewelers,  These gemstones were officially adopted in 1912. In the US, this is the accepted list.

Traditional Birthstones

This list of the older, more traditional birthstones reflect various societal customs and traditions from as far back as the 15th century.

traditional birthstones are older society-based birthstones. Since many different cultures had their own list, jewelers' lists are often inconsistent over what constitutes a traditional birthstone.

The Traditional Birthstones contain many stones which were popular choices, often reflecting Polish tradition. For instance in the Polish tradition, December is turquoise.

The custom of actually wearing birthstones first gained popularity in Poland in the fifteenth century. Tradition suggested everyone wear the birthstone for each month, since the powers of the gemstone were heightened during its month. For the fullest effect, individuals needed to own an entire set of twelve gemstones and rotate them monthly.

The Gregorian calendar has poems matching each month with its birthstone. These are traditionally the stones in English-speaking societies. It is not known whether these verses below are of the originally Gregorian calendar or not.

Mystical Birthstones

Mystical Birthstones are of Tibetan origin and date back over a thousand years.  These stones may be considered talismans of amulets.  A talsiman is something that has the power to attract something of benefit for the wearer such as virtues or blessings.  An amulet is used to fend off evil, danger or misfortunes.

The month of your birth was associated with a gemstone and an amulate or talisman was carved from the stone and worn.  They were often carried in a pouch or worn around the neck or carried on the person.

Ayurvedic Birthstones

Ayurveda is an ancient system of health care that is native to the Indian subcontinent.

The Ayurvedic birthstone list is from Indian medicine and beliefs and dates back to 1500 BC.

It is presently in daily use by millions of people. The word "Ayurveda" is a tatpurusha compound of the word âyusmeaning "life", "life principle", or "long life" and the word veda, which refers to a system of "knowledge". Thus "Ayurveda" roughly translates as the "knowledge of life", "knowledge of a long life" or even "science of life".

According to Charaka Samhita, "life" itself is defined as the "combination of the body, sense organs, mind and soul, the factor responsible for preventing decay and death, which sustains the body over time.

According to this perspective, Ayurveda is concerned with measures to protect "ayus", which includes healthy living along with therapeutic measures that relate to physical, mental, social and spiritual harmony.
